Fall in Sabina, Lazio? There is more than one reason to say yes

Autunno in Sabina e nel Lazio

Sabina is a destination that is not just for Romans, especially in summer, when local citizens flee from the unbearable heat, smog and humidity of the city to relax in the sparkling temperatures of the hills and the Sabine Mountains. Often, however, we just think of it as a summer destination. Today, there are certainly more than just a few reasons to arrive from all over Italy (and beyond) and spend days here in autumn, a fascinating season that ferries nature towards winter rest.

The foliage, a natural spectacle to be enjoyed in the Sabina woods

The foliage, which in Italian can be translated with the term ” fogliame”, evokes the idyllic scenery of iridescent nature, whose colors turn from the intense spring greens of summer to the notes of ocher yellow, reds, warm browns and of the whole range of possible intermediate shades.

The leaves, still hanging precariously from the branches, change their appearance, and filter the sun’s rays, and seem to mirror themselves on the ground, where a soft, yet at the same time crackling carpet, is formed by their already fallen sisters. A spectacle provided, free of charge and with the generosity of which Nature is capable and in which mankind remains its astonished spectator.

We mentioned the woods, the Sabine paths found on the mountains. Imagine them during this changing and bewitching season, in which the cycle of life finds its concrete counterpart. Imagine yourself trekking, or taking a simple stroll, in a natural art gallery, where a skillful hand has enjoyed creating a coherent and lively sequence of colors.

Numerous great reasons for an autumn weekend at the Residenze del Borgo, just a few steps from Rome

The Residenze del Borgo di Cicignano are a perfect starting point for exploring the autumn foliage found in the Sabine woods. Monte Soratte is a privileged setting, yet so too are the Sabine Mountains with their Pizzuto and Tancia peaks, and the chain of the Lucretili Mountains, not far away. Between one excursion and another, which can also be enriched with itineraries and walks, such as the San Francesco in the Valle Santa Reatina or the San Benedetto walks, you can refresh yourself with a relaxing morning to discover villages that are treasures of art such as the exquisite Cicignano as a first choice and the nearby Collevecchio or Casperia.

The ideal place for a picnic, weather permitting, as a greeting to day trips to the countryside, is the equipped area in front of the Sanctuary of Santa Maria in Vescovio, in the municipality of Torri in Sabina, which can be combined with a visit to the ancient and beautiful place of worship, dating back to the 4th century.

Autumn, flavors and fun in Sabina

The naturalistic wonders, along with the cultural experiences, are certainly important, but we’d like to remind you of another important aspect regarding a stay in Sabina, in the Lazio region. Food and wine. Its typical products, created with craftsmanship given the small size, on average, of the local farms, but linked to strict production regulations that dictate times and quality, are well known beyond its borders.

How can we not think of Olio Sabina DOP olive oil, a delicate gold liquid capable of  enhancing any dish, which in this period is celebrated in many of the towns and villages involved in the olive harvest season. And this brings us straight to another reason to say yes to a trip, in autumn, to our Sabina – preferably to Cicignano, of course! – and that is, the local festivals. Those fantastic celebrations in which the villages come alive to offer all their best, in terms of gastronomy, but also of culture and entertainment.

Canneto Sabino, Palombara Sabina, and many other beautiful centers, especially in November, put their precious condiment, produced in the region for millennia, at the center of engaging events. And which becomes, just to give an example, the cooking liquid of the ‘Leonessana rescallata’ potato. Try it in October, at the Leonessana Potato Festival, in the town located in Upper Lazio. It will satisfy even the most refined palates.

But it’s still autumn, and the large Sabine woods can offer those natural riches that most typically characterize this period, chestnuts and truffles. The precious Marrone Antrodocano PGI is a delicious, large chestnut with a thin and easily removable skin, a crunchy tasty delight even when raw, and which becomes irresistible in the form of roasted chestnuts. Borgovelino and Antrodoco, in November and December, celebrate it in other festivals that should not be missed.

And, speaking of truffles, is there anything more sought after? Between the end of September and the end of December, the prized black truffle grows spontaneously in the territory of the province of Rieti, not just in the surroundings of Norcia, which has always been known for the most appreciated and renowned varieties.
